Oftentimes, when asked to shut or open the blinds, passengers in-flight would then ask the reason~~WHY?
Let me explain this to you. There are two occasions when passengers are kindly asked to “open” the blinds by us cabin crews, namely during take-off and during landing.
The reason is simple. This is because during take-off and landing, more complicated measures shall be taken to achieve them smoothly. Therefore, if attention is not paid enough or mistakes are made during these two occasions, some “accidents” might happen, such as engine fire or other serious technical problems. Flight attendants may be the ones who are more familiar with situations in the cabin, but when it comes to the exterior circumstances, passengers shall be more dependent to take notice of. There were many cases when accidents were happening during take-off and landing, among which about 90% were noticed and reported by passengers. Passengers may also contribute a great deal to help make a flight safe and sound. This is why we ask passengers to open the blinds during take-off and landing.
On the other hand, only when passengers are at long-haul flights, are they required to shut the blinds. As there is quite a long period of time between the first and the second meal services during a long-haul flight, a number of passengers would feel sleepy and exhausted, many of which may even be the tiring transit ones; thus, in order to make a comfortable and cozy sleeping environment, blinds are generally asked to be shut. At the same time, lighting would be dimmed and the dusky cabin would then become a nice place to help passengers fall sleep.
