In a number of people’s points of view, flight attendants are just the so-called “high-class waiters or waitresses” who wear decently, act gracefully and get good pay. Well, actually, we are more than what’s been considered in this way.

Of course we have to make ourselves “good-looking” and behave accordingly when we work in-flight because by doing so, we can present our professionalism in the first sight out of our passengers. Meal distribution and collection as well as responding to passengers’ multifarious requests are our main tasks, which seem to be exactly the same duties as what waiters and waitress normally do in the restaurants. However, as a flight attendant, he/she should extend their knowledge and skills to the scope of first aids and evacuation in case any accidents happen unexpectedly.

During our pre-work training, we are trained to be familiar with the handlings of such accidents as from the small case like nose bleeding to the severe one like heart attack or even the delivery for a pregnant woman. In addition, although a happy and safe flight is the main goal and anticipated by everyone for an air journey, we shall not ignore the fact that any accident related to evacuation or hijack, though chances are slim, might be possible to occur and we need to get well-prepared for any rainy day. In order to make us familiarized with the handling procedures and knowledge for situations of first-aid and evacuation, our in-flight service managers are required to pop quiz their designated subordinate crew safety questions; besides, every crew member is rostered a few days for a brush-up session in the company on an annual basis. How to respond to all the in-flight accidents needs to be kept in mind so we flight attendants will not be struck with a panic when encountering any.

Therefore, flight attendants are not just waiters and waitresses, but can also be entitled as the “Nannies in the Air”. Despite offering passengers enjoyable and comfortable journey, we also have to make the flight smooth and safe. It’s not a cup of tea to be a flight attendant because he or she has got to be equipped with numerous types of skills. Though not an easy job for us in essence, when we see passengers with happy and joyful faces and when we hear them say “thank you” to us, all the tiredness will soon be transformed into the satisfactory sense of responsibility.
