As tons of revelers did at the night of the last day of 2010, I joined the midnight countdown in Taipei in order to view the most dazzling Taipei 101 firework show ever to welcome the century of Taiwan , the Republic of China. Instead of cramming into the jam-packed vicinity area of Taipei 101, I, together with some of my friends, chose to watch the show and celebrate the end of last year on the top of one of my pals’ apartment building.

You know what, reportedly there were about 800,000 people crowding the streets around Taipei City Hall , many of whom were said to have tried their best to secure a spot with the best view of the firework hours before the Taipei 101 firework show officially kicked offWell, thanks god that I was not that crazy, so I finally took my friend’s advice to have our party in-door or I might have been killed by the braving chilly winds with temperatures as low as 5°C or squeezed to death by the crowd packed like sardines.

** 第一句…, many of whom were…原句是…, and many of them were…。

Well, here I would like to show my deep salute and respect to Cai Guoqiang, an international explosives artist, who designed the 2011 Taipei 101 fireworks, as well as to my other friends who in the freezing cold weather and super crowded condition  risked their lives” to attend the countdown party in Xinyi District (like A-ji, Mars, Erique, Grace…) and to those who I heard had gone all out to occupy a good site in the mountains since the afternoon in order to take good firework photos at the turn of the year 2001 in the night (like my blogger buddy, Richard).

The first day of the year 2011 is also viewed as a day of commemoration by a number of couples in Taiwan because they chose this day to tie the knot to mark Taiwan ’s 100-year-old age. My college mate, Calvin Huang, was no exception. Being together with our mutual lower classmate, Yvonne Chang, for more than 10 years, Calvin at last proposed Yvonne last year and they were eventually married on the first day of this year. He invited me and some of our ex-schoolmates to witness his extremely important moment of life. The wedding atmosphere was so romantic, making us all touched by the elaborately decorated scene and his sweet speech addressing his pretty wife and us participants. Also, thanks to Calvin’s invitation so that I could see those old schoolmates and we could have a wonderful opportunity to reunite.

Cooking tonic food to warm our bodies up in winter time seems to be customary for many Taiwanese people. Well, once again I would also like to show my kitchen magic and present you something delicious and mouth-watering, which I just cooked at the end of last year. This time, the focus is on one of the most traditional and local Taiwanese food-Ma Yo Ji, the chicken soup cooked with sesame oil.

I was not making soup but the steamed rice with chicken and sesame oil, which is also tasty and given thumps-up by whomever tried it. I did not use the sticky rice for this dish but the Tai long-shaped rice (can be bought in any supermarket) because sticky rice is not good for digestion and Tai long-shaped rice actually tastes as chewy as sticky rice. Alright! Let’s see the recipe shown below.

** I do not exactly point out the amount of the ingredients needed to be prepared because everything is actually at your discretion. More diced chicken is better and the use of chicken drumstick is highly recommended. 10 something slices of ginger are just enough. As for the sesame oil, the amount can be a bit more, just more enough to cover the ginger slices during pan-frying. No water is suggested for making the soup because the strong smell of rice wine will die away afterwards; in addition, rice wine can be added more during cooking session. It’s not necessary to add salt into the soup because the soy sauce paste may salt the steamed rice, but you may add a little bit if you want. I did put a little salt to the soup; in doing so, I did not have to add too much soy sauce paste to the cooked rice.

** This sesame oil chicken rice is really fragrant and tasty. Every time I make it, it’s finished in a short time by others. I love it very much.
